Private Meeker shares photos of his deployment with Shings' class.
From LISD: Second-grade students in Katie Shings’ class at Bluebonnet Elementary had a visit from a special pen pal all the way from Afghanistan. Cooper Wadding, a student in Shings’ class, enlisted his classmates to correspond with his cousin, Private Christopher Meeker, while he was deployed overseas, and now that he is back in the States, he stopped by to meet his new friends.
While visiting, Pvt. Meeker talked about his location overseas, what he did in his free time, what life was like in Afghanistan and why he wanted to serve our country. He also left students with some encouraging words of wisdom.
“Pvt. Meeker talked with the students about the importance of going to college and doing well in school,” Shing said. “He encouraged kids to read, do their homework and listen to their teachers.”
Shing said the visit was about more than just meeting their pen pal, she wanted to create an educated citizenry in her classroom. How does she hope to create this? Click here to find out!

From CBS/DFW: Once a month, hopeful entrepreneurs can now pitch their ideas for inventions and new businesses to North Texas investors. It’s called “The Boardroom,” a softer, gentler version of the hit show “Shark Tank,” which hooks couch potatoes and millionaires alike with an inside look at what it takes to turn a great idea into a successful business. Its creator, Charles Horton of Flower Mound, is a fan of the show but says he wanted to see more substance.
Frances Pietsch of Flower Mound submitted this recipe that appears in the February/March issue of Taste of Home’s Simple and Delicious magazine. “You can’t go wrong with peanut butter and Nutella, a hazelnut flavored spread,” she says.
From CBSDFW.com: At St. Nicholas Church in Flower Mound, the congregation is getting healthy, but their inspiration is coming from the most unlikely of places, a pig named Avery. Fifteen years ago the pig was dumped on the church’s property. She has since become a regular member of the flock.
From Nebraska.tv: Nebraska basketball donor Neal Hawks of Flower Mound has taken out a full-page ad in the state’s largest paper to support beleaguered men’s basketball coach Doc Sadler and implore the school to devote more resources to the program. Hawks addressed his Omaha World-Herald ad to sports writers who have been critical of Sadler’s work and Nebraska fans everywhere. The ad cited Office of Postsecondary Education statistics showing the $4.1 million spent on men’s basketball in 2010 ranked last in the Big Ten.
