Private Meeker shares photos of his deployment with Shings' class.
From LISD: Second-grade students in Katie Shings’ class at Bluebonnet Elementary had a visit from a special pen pal all the way from Afghanistan. Cooper Wadding, a student in Shings’ class, enlisted his classmates to correspond with his cousin, Private Christopher Meeker, while he was deployed overseas, and now that he is back in the States, he stopped by to meet his new friends.
While visiting, Pvt. Meeker talked about his location overseas, what he did in his free time, what life was like in Afghanistan and why he wanted to serve our country. He also left students with some encouraging words of wisdom.
“Pvt. Meeker talked with the students about the importance of going to college and doing well in school,” Shing said. “He encouraged kids to read, do their homework and listen to their teachers.”
Shing said the visit was about more than just meeting their pen pal, she wanted to create an educated citizenry in her classroom. How does she hope to create this? Click here to find out!
