From ESPN: James Hanna won’t have to travel far to get to the Cowboys’ rookie mini-camp next week. It’s just about a 20-minute ride from Flower Mound to Valley Ranch. The Cowboys took the Oklahoma tight end in the sixth round Saturday, fulfilling a need pick with only Jason Witten and John Phillips on the 53-man roster. “Honestly I didn’t know where I’d go and just coming to the Cowboys, it was an even better feeling than I thought it would be,” Hanna said. “It was real exciting.” Read more@

From LISD: The McKamy eighth-grade girls track team won the district championship for the second year in a row. Individual district champions are Jordyn Hayslett in the 100m and 200m dash and Ashlan Hustava in the 400m dash.

Forte, a senior who has signed with Oklahoma State, won the American Family Insurance 3-Point Championship in New Orleans on Friday. From OKState.com: Oklahoma State signee Marcus Smart has been named the Gatorade Player of the Year for boys basketball in the state of Texas for the second-consecutive year, it was announced Thursday. The Gatorade POY in 2011 as a junior, Smart led the Flower Mound Marcus High School Marauders to their second-consecutive Class 5A state championship this past season. He averaged 15.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.8 steals and 1.3 blocks per game in leading Marcus to a 39-2 record. From DallasNews.com: Flower Mound’s Melissa Cook, 32, fought humid air to earn her sixth women’s title at the St. Paddy’s Day Dash Down Greenville 5K. She finished in 16:31, 12 seconds faster than her first place time a year ago. Men’s defending race winner, Andrew Cook, Melissa’s husband and running coach at Flower Mound High School, was unable to participate because of a hernia. According to his wife, Andrew was “bummed” he couldn’t defend his crown but he’s scheduled to have surgery next month. Read more@
 


 

 
From Austin American-Statesman: Two Oklahoma State signees shined on the University of Texas campus on Saturday night.
Phil Forte and Marcus Smart combined for 39 points and Flower Mound Marcus successfully defended its Class 5A championship with a 56-52 victory over Fort Bend Travis. The Marauders’ four-point victory officially closed out the 2011-12 basketball season. Read more @

From Houston Chronicle: It was the game that basketball fans across the state were waiting for. Flower Mound Marcus has been ranked No. 1 in the state nearly all season and Fort Bend Travis No. 2 – both squads have been known all year for their stifling defenses. The two took center stage Saturday night at the Frank Erwin Center in the University Interscholastic League Class 5A State championship. The two gave the crowd the low-scoring, defensive battle it expected as Marcus defended its state title, knocking off Travis 56-52. Read more@

Not only did the Marauder senior score a game-high 23 points, he contributed 11 rebounds and made some of the tournament’s most dazzling passes. FOX Sports Southwest will offer live webcasts of all UIL boys basketball state tournament semifinal games on Thursday and Friday, and Saturday’s championship games in Class 1A (Division I & II), Class 2A, Class 3A and Class 4A.  Defending 5Astate champion Flower Mound Marcus will play Garland Naaman Forest at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

The 5A title game on Saturday will be televised live on FOX Sports Southwest and on FOX Sports Southwest Plus in markets carrying the Mavericks-Warriors NBA game on FOX Sports Southwest. The 5A championship also will be replayed on FOX Sports Southwest in South Texas markets at 10:30 p.m. and in all Texas markets on Sunday, March 11 at 1:00 p.m.
