The San Jose Mercury News reports that the Earthquakes chose UC Santa Barbara junior Sam Garza of Highland Village and Marcus High School at No. 6 in the MLS draft Thursday. Garza, a 22-year-old member of Generation adidas , totaled 21 goals and 14 assists in three collegiate seasons split between the University of Denver and the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. Earthquakes GM John Doyle: ”Garza was one of the fastest guys in the combine. He was the one guy that we wanted.” John Gall, his coach at Marcus High, told the newspaper: ”A lot of people are going to be surprised by what they see from Sam Garza. People won’t be expecting much from him. There are not too many players that I’ve seen with such natural ability, but on top of that, a sheer drive.” Read more@
